The light is not allowed into their faces because the umbrella cuts the light before it hits their face. Maybe by adding a flash but that might just light up a few faces. -Rachel
The photographer likely focused on the clouds in the background which makes the peoples face darker. To fix this when you took the photo make the people the main focal point. To fix this after you took the photo you can edit the photo using your favorite photo editing software and increase the exposure of the faces to brighten them up.
Their faces are dark because of the under exposure and the focus on the clouds. You could try to fix the picture by fixing the exposure to lighten the picture. Chayse

The exposure is not enough. A flash light can be used when I take the photo. After I took the photo, I can fix the brightness.
